Book: Discovered Secrets

Do you love descriptive writing which draws you into an environment so much you feel like you've been there? Keen on romantic suspense from a hero's perspective? If the answers are yes, you'll love Discovered Secrets by Julie Bawden-Davis, the first novel in her romantic suspense series Discovered Truth.

The romance of this novel is unique in that it is as much a love story for a country as it is for the characters. The hero is an LA Times Investigative Reporter called Jesse McMillan, and he takes the reader on a journey by reminiscing of his youth set in the Panama Canal Zone in the late 70's and combining it with his present day investigations into drug smuggling. The story is an intricately woven combination of past and present which are gradually brought together at the end of the book with an unexpected and satisfyingly happy ending.

Bawden-Davis shows a love of Panama through the eyes of her character that brings the story and also the country vividly to life. True friendship is key throughout the novel and characters are described with clarity and depth as they explore the world of drug running through the eyes of youth and also with the hindsight of professional journalism. The plot and suspense of the story take the lead in this novel, rather than the romance element which makes it quite different to the novels I usually enjoy, however in this case 'different' is definitely good and I would recommend this book. I'm told by the author that in the following books, romance is more of a key feature. On a final note, the descriptions of the environment, both socially, physically and politically were captured with a brilliance that will stay with me for some time.

In addition to writing romantic suspense, Julie Bawden-Davis is a bestselling journalist, blogger and speaker. Widely published, she has written 10 books and more than 2,500 articles for a wide variety of national and international publications, including Parade.com, where she has a weekly column. Speaking of romantic suspense, my own novel Trust In You will also be reviewed on her blog in the coming weeks, so be sure to keep an eye out. My thanks to Julie in advance.
